Placenta is an important organ, maintaining the connection between the organisms of mother  and foetus in the period of intrauterine development. However, even having no specialized knowledge the mankind from the ancient times considered the biological role of placenta to be much broader and also dowered it with certain mythical features. Thus, some ancient folks had a tradition to preserve the placenta after birth and sometimes it was even swadded together with a newborn during some period of time.

Long before the description of the biological and histologic composition of the placenta, placental preparations were widely used for the stimulation of wounds healing in ancient soldiers. Placental masks are known to be one of the mysteries of beauty of the Egyptian  queen Cleopatra. Placental drugs were also used by the Father of medicine Hyppocrates (5th century BC) and Ibn Sina (Avicenna, 10th century AD), a legendary Arabian doctor of old times. Placental medications were also used in the rehabilitation of cosmonauts in USSR.

Modern investigations of the biochemical composition of the placenta showed that it contains a number of unique biologically active compounds – growth factors, some hormones, anticoagulants, enzymes, minerals, vitamins etc. Hence, placental extracts possess immunoregulatory, regenerative, neuroprotective, antiinflammatory and whitening properties, normalize hormonal function in females. In different countries of the world numerous drugs based on the placental extracts were developed and commercialized, which enjoy wide use in modern medicine and cosmetology.

Thus, placental extracts have multidirectional effect on the course of the pathologic processes and are used in the schemes of the complex treatment and rehabilitation of patients with gynecological diseases, systemic inflammatory disorders of the connective tissues, skin lesions, burns, wounds, chronic ulcers and immune deficiencies.

Courtesy of its biological composition, the placental extract is characterized by the following effects:

1) immunoregulatory;

2) regenerative;

3) neuroprotective;

3) antiinflammatory and anesthesising;

4) antiallergic;

5) anticancer;

6) normalize hormonal function in females.

Amniotic membrane of the placenta is used in the treatment of wounds, burns, lesions of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. Actually placental tissue was also reported to be a rich source of stem cells.

The neuroprotective effect of the placental extract is especially worth attention, what allows to use it in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with neurologic disorders and injuries of the central and peripheral nervous system. According to the literary data, application of the placental extract in children with mental retardation resulted in the increase of IQ coefficient and improvement of cognitive processes, associated with learning, analysis and memory. Administration of placental extract was also shown to inhibit the activity of the enzyme monoamineoxigenase, that allows to assume that placental extract has antidepressant and nootropic effects.

In cosmetology placental extract is used for the following purposes:

• whitening of skin;

• treatment of psoriasis;

• treatment of vitiligo;

• treatment of burns, chronic wounds, trophic ulcers;

• stimulation of hair growth;

• treatment of scars and smoothing of wrinkles;

• inhibition of aging processes and general rejuvenation effect.

The world practice of the banking of the placenta implicates its autologic storage in specialized cryobanks with the following production of the individual drugs or isolation of stem cells as well as industrial manufacturing of  preparations for medicine and cosmetology.

In Ukraine, the investigations of biochemical composition of the placenta and working out of the methods of production of drugs from this biological material began as eary as in the middle of the 20th century and actually the Ukrainian scientists achieved significant advances in this field.

In Ukraine, the Institute of Cell Therapy was the first biobank in the country, that offered the service of cryostorage of the placenta with the purpose of manufacturing of the individual drugs from it for the whole family and the Institute scientists have more than 30 years of work experience with the placenta.

Decades-long studies allowed the associates of the Institute of Cell Therapy to develop the method of placenta cryostorage, enabling to preserve the valuable biologically active compounds present in it. The own laboratory complex gives the opportunity to conduct thorough control of cleanliness and quality of the produced placental drugs and to guarantee the safety of their application. Placental preparations, produced by the Cryobank showed their high efficacy both in medical practice and cosmetology.

In 2012, the method of isolation of the mesenchymal multipotent stromal cells from the frozen placental tissue, patented by the Institute of Cell Therapy, was awarded a diploma and a golden medal on the International salon of inventions and technologies "New Time".

During the recent 15 years the results of investigations of the scientists of the Institute of Cell Therapy, devoted to the evaluation of the biological characteristics and therapeutic properties of the placental preparations, were published in the famous international scientific journals and Institute scientists are regularly invited to present reports and give lectures on the leading foreign congresses and forums.  The Institute of Cell Therapy also is a member of the International Placenta Stem Cell Society. Every client is offered individual approach: a curative complex of procedures is developed taking into account the individual properties of skin and condition of the organism as well as world tendencies of the beauty industry. The methods of manual and apparatus cosmetology allow to choose the scheme of application of biopreparations strictly individually taking into account the age, condition of the skin and wishes of the client. You also may be offered the complex scheme of revitalization of the total organism.

The isolation of pacental extract as well as production of cosmetics from the placenta, preserved in the Cryobank of the Institute of Cell Therapy are performed absolutely free of charge! Should placenta be stored simultaneously with the umbilical cord blood, the fee for placenta storage is not charged!

You may receive detailed consultation on the issues of the individual production and application of the placental extracts in the Institute of Cell Therapy.
