Cyprus is a well-known tourist destination in the Mediterranean region and its tourism sector plays a vital role in the economy of the country. All these years, the success of Cyprus was based on the sea and sun concept  - the beautiful weather, the nice beaches and the luxurious accommodation. However, Cyprus is not only sea and sun. It is also an Island with history and culture. It has all these so-called “special interests” for tourists, and health tourism is part of that.

Health tourism is a combination of the tourism industry and the health sector. Cyprus is an already established tourism destination with excellent infrastructure with many years of experience. Adding the well proven medical infrastructure, the modern and technologically sophisticated hospitals, highly qualified specialist consultants, doctors, nurses, technical staff and the very high standards of hygiene, and while English widely spoken throughout the island, Cyprus is indeed a promising health tourism destination.

Undoublty the increasing expansion of health tourism over the past few years has raised the need to establish an organisation whose main concern would be to place Cyprus on the global medical tourism map. The Cyprus Health Services Promotion Board (CHSPB) is a non-profit organization that was founded in November 2006 after an initiative taken by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), aiming mainly to the development and promotion of Cyprus as a Health Centre. Since then the CHSPB has become the main point of contact for health tourism related issues in Cyprus. It is worth noting that all our members are approved and licensed by the Cyprus Government while some of them have also moved a step ahead by signing contracts to obtain international accreditation standards from accrediting bodies approved by the ISQUA.

In addition to the above, Cyprus is an EU member since 2004 which ensures that all necessary EU directives have been introduced and incorporated into national legislation. It is also in the Eurozone which allows patients to easily estimate their expenditures. Cyprus is a cost competitive compared to other European countries and is easily accessible as it lies at the continental crossroads between Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
